The central image shows the announcement of the Incarnation by the angel Gabriel to Mary (Luke 1:26–38), the announcement of auspicious news. The 14th century altarpiece is surrounded by 24 carat gold leaf and photographs of roses from the artist’s garden. The angel underneath holds the banner which says “blessed is the man that endureth”. The skull underneath is filled with spring flowers which explore the theme of MEMENTO MORI. The Latin phrase “AVE SRATIA PLENA DOMINUS TECVM” means “Rejoice, Mary, the Lord is with you”.
